Types of Hosting

Shared Hosting

  • Multiple websites hosted on the same server
  • Provides most common features (PHP, MySQL, etc.)
  • Limited flexibility and control
  • Best for blogs and small sites with typical requirements

Virtual Private Server (VPS)

  • More expensive than shared hosting, but less risk
  • Multiple sites stored on same server in virtual containers
  • Typically provides root access and full control over features, software, etc.
  • More control, greater flexibility, and better performance than shared hosting

Dedicated Server

  • Provides complete control over the web server
  • The entire server dedicated to your website(s)
  • More expensive than other options
  • Requires a solid understanding of server software
  • Best for sites needing control, flexibility, and performance

Cloud Hosting

  • Infinitely scalable
  • Site hosted across multiple servers (the "cloud")
  • Typically costs less than other hosting options
  • Requires a solid understanding of server and cloud software
  • Best for sites with lots of traffic
