Using MYSQL Database

Setting up and using mysql in rails app

Using MYSQL Database

Install using homebrew: brew install mysql

We've installed your MySQL database without a root password. To secure it run:
    mysql_secure_installation

MySQL is configured to only allow connections from localhost by default

To connect run:
    mysql -uroot

To have launchd start mysql now and restart at login:
  brew services start mysql
Or, if you don't want/need a background service you can just run:
  mysql.server start (stop, restart, status)

  • To connect: mysql -u root
    • The -u says login as user root
  • To exit: exit

Set default mysql password

  • Run in command line: msqladmin -u root password
  • Then it will prompt you for a new password!
  • Once you've set a password, you will need to run mysql -u root -p to login

Install ruby gem mysql

  • gem install mysql2, not mysql
