It's an advanced use of the edf to have a drop down list with the list value displayed != the edf value. But if you can create an list with each row having the text you want, a null character, and the real value then your drop down can say "Inherit from parent" (A text string), but the value recorded in the edf is 0/1/2/etc., a simple numeric value.
The service plan drop down in the ignite location level edf's is an example of this. You see a string, but you are setting a number.
