1) Create attributes :
Color
Size

2) select the following when creating new attributes
Scope: Global
select: Dropdown
Apply to Selected Product Types:
Simple Product, and configurable
3) Use to create configurable product: Yes



Front end properties
Visible on Product View Page on Front-end: Yes


Create Attribute set
When creating a new attribute set, select the attributes 
on the right that you want to be part of this new set
- put it under General


- then create new products of the new type of the new attribute , not default,

- after you have created sample products of the new attribute type ,
- create a configurable product and check the options created of the new attribute

- then associate the products you want to be part of this configurable product

- set individual products as not visible individually
